bdes website
I was tasked with updating the website for Best Day Ever Spot. Initially the goal was to implement a few new apps, make product listings more consistent and add new designs to the website. In the process of conducting a thorough content audit of the website, I realized that the main navigation was not intuitive and needed to be updated.
Original Navigation
The original navigation for the website didn’t follow a cohesive pattern and a lot of products and themes had been added in as the designs were developed. This made it hard to track down anything on the website without using the search bar.
Reorganization
To start the process of reorganizing the navigation, I looked at Best Day Ever Spot’s competitors as well as some other businesses with similar products. The vast majority of these websites were organized by product, by theme, or by a combination of the two. Best Day Ever Spot’s customers tended to shop by both so I suggested we include both options on the site.
The next step was to figure out cohesive groups for the products to fall under. I tried several combinations and tested them with people who were unfamiliar with the products to see if they could find items if they were only given the larger categories. The winning groups were Edible Favors, Beverage Favors, Practical Favors and Gifts & Keepsakes.
To make it easier to sort through products by theme, I used the same subcategories under each of the major themes and holidays that Best Day Ever Spot creates products for. I then created an Other section so there was a spot for smaller collections.
The business owners also wanted to add extra emphasis to a couple categories so we included Create Your Own Designs and Campus Stores in the main navigation.
Updated Navigation
In the six months following the website update, there was a 97% increase in store sessions and a 41% increase in sales dollars.
